controversial plan to expand Jackson Laboratory into south Florida has
been withdrawn by the Bar Harbor-based genetic research facility in the
face of taxpayer opposition and new political dynamics. Charles E.
Hewett, chief operating officer at Jackson Lab, says that while the
company had hoped to build the 145,000-square-foot research center with
$260 million dollars from Florida taxpayers, proponents of the project
are now exploring funding alternatives with Florida Gov.-elect Rick
Scott, who has called for steep cuts in government spending. ..
