FGCU to House NSF-Funded Red Tide Research

A red tide spreading along this Gulf of Mexico shoreline has killed millions of fish, threatened the health of human residents and affected tourism in the region. To study the effects of these harmful algae blooms, the Greater Caribbean Center for Ciguatera Research has been awarded funds from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, one of the National Institutes of Health. The research, led by a principal investigator from Florida Gulf Coast University (FCGU), will focus on ciguatera fish poisoning and the environmental factors influencing its occurrence.
